After months of negotiations, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) and the Department of Labour and Employment Officials (LEO) have finally reached an agreement.

The agreement was aimed at addressing several issues, including salary increases, job security, and working conditions for NEHAWU members who work in the Department of Labour and Employment offices.

One of the key aspects of the agreement was a salary increase of up to 7.5% for NEHAWU members. The increase will be implemented in two phases, with the first increment of 5% being awarded on 1 July 2021, and the remaining 2.5% being awarded on 1 July 2022.

Another significant aspect of the agreement was the commitment to addressing job security concerns. The agreement stipulates that all temporary employees who have been employed for more than six months will be made permanent. Additionally, there will be no further outsourcing of services that can be provided by NEHAWU members.

The agreement also addresses the issue of working conditions for NEHAWU members. The Department of Labour and Employment has committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all employees. This includes ensuring that all offices comply with COVID-19 safety protocols and providing personal protective equipment to all employees.

NEHAWU has welcomed the agreement, stating that it represents a significant victory for workers in the Department of Labour and Employment. The Union has also commended the Department for engaging in constructive negotiations and reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.

The agreement serves as a reminder of the importance of collective bargaining and the benefits it can bring to both employers and employees. By working together, NEHAWU and the Department of Labour and Employment have been able to reach an agreement that addresses the needs of workers while also ensuring that the Department can continue to provide essential services to the public.
